Garbage Disposal – Troubleshooting
If your garbage disposal is not working, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot and fix the issue:
- Check to make sure that the disposal is properly plugged in and that the outlet it’s plugged into is functioning. (This should not be your problem)
- If the disposal is hardwired, check the circuit breaker or fuse to make sure it hasn’t tripped or blown.
- Check the air switch (if your disposal has one) to make sure that it’s being activated when you press the button. This is usually a red button on the bottom on the disposal, or a black button on the side.
- Check to see if the disposal is jammed by attempting to turn the blades manually. If the blades are jammed, use an allen wrench to attempt to free them. If the blades are still jammed, you may need to call a plumber. Insert the allen wrench underneath the disposal and turn the allen wrench clockwise and counter clockwise.
- Check the water and power connections to ensure everything is properly connected.
If the above troubleshooting steps don’t solve the problem, place a work order on your Resident Portal.
