Garbage Disposal – Troubleshooting

If your garbage disposal is not working, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot and fix the issue:

  1. Check the circuit breaker or fuse to make sure it hasn’t tripped or blown.
  2. Check the air switch (if your disposal has one) to make sure that it’s being activated when you press the button. This is usually a red button on the bottom on the disposal, or a black button on the side. See video below.
  3. Check to see if the disposal is jammed by attempting to turn the blades manually. If the blades are jammed, use an allen wrench to attempt to free them. If the blades are still jammed, you may need to call a plumber. Insert the allen wrench underneath the disposal and turn the allen wrench clockwise and counter clockwise.
  4. If the garbage disposal is still not working, it may be a more serious issue. Please place a request in your Residence Portal (provide as much information as possible to help us expedite the repair and maintenance).
