New Mixed-Income Housing Project Approved in Charlotte’s Historic West End
CHARLOTTE DEVELOPMENT | HOUSING | WEST END
Charlotte City Council recently approved funding for a new housing project in one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods — and it’s a development that could play an important role in the ongoing conversation about housing affordability.
The project will bring mixed-income housing and neighborhood amenities to the Historic West End, an area just west of Uptown near Johnson C. Smith University.

In the Reel above, we explain what the project includes and why it’s getting attention across Charlotte’s real estate and development community.
Here’s a closer look.
A $4 Million Loan to Support the Project
Charlotte City Council unanimously approved a $4 million loan to help fund the development, which will be located along West Trade Street in the Historic West End.
The project is planned as a six-story mixed-use building that will include:
- 145 housing units
- Units designed for a range of income levels, from affordable to market rate
- Residential and commercial space in the same building
Mixed-income developments like this are designed to create housing opportunities for residents at different income levels while maintaining a cohesive community.
A Different Approach to Affordable Housing
One notable feature of this project is how the units are being built.
According to the proposal, all units will be constructed to market-rate specifications. That means residents who qualify for affordable housing won’t need to relocate if their income increases over time.
This type of approach aims to create longer-term housing stability for residents while maintaining consistent building quality across the entire development.
Community Spaces Included in the Plan
Beyond housing, the project will also include community-focused elements on the ground floor.
Plans call for:
- A co-op grocery market
- A small business incubator
These spaces are intended to support neighborhood access to fresh food while also helping local entrepreneurs launch or grow businesses within the community.
What Comes Next
Developers are currently targeting groundbreaking next year, with an expected opening timeline around 2028.
As the project moves forward, it will likely remain part of the broader discussion around housing affordability and neighborhood growth in Charlotte.
Why Projects Like This Matter
Affordable housing has become one of the biggest conversations in Charlotte real estate.
As the city continues to grow, developments that combine mixed-income housing, community services, and neighborhood investment will play an important role in shaping how Charlotte evolves.
Projects like this one in the Historic West End are worth watching as the city works to balance growth with long-term housing access.
